When doing business with the government, there are multiple things you need to have in place. First, your business needs to be incorporated with the state your business operates in. Next, you need to obtain an employer identification number or EIN so the IRS can easily identify your business. Finally, the business needs a DUNS number

If you’re preparing to scale up by selling your services or products to the government, it’s time to apply for a DUNS number. Today, GovLia, government liaisons, will discuss the DUNS number, the documents needed for the DUNS number application, and how to apply for a business DUNS number.

What is a DUNS number?

DUNS is the acronym for Data Universal Numbering System. A DUNS number is a unique nine (9) digit code assigned to your business. This numbering system is monitored by Dun & Bradstreet, a commercial financial company that helps keep a business’ credit up to date with credit management.

Whether you’re a business owner looking to do business with a government agency, a corporation, partner another business, or even if you’re looking to buy an existing business, a business’ DUNS number is a primary way to access the financial health of a business.

Through DUNS, you can look up and monitor a business to see how it is performing financially. You can see if the business is paying its loans and if it is achieving access to capital or credit.

Because the DUNS number is unique to your business, the business owner must apply for it. Below, we discuss the documentation needed to complete the DUNS application process.

Documents Needed to Apply For a DUNS number?

When applying for a DUNS number, you will need two (2) documents for proof of business and address. These documents can include the following:

  • Incorporation documents from the state
  • Information for fictitious name or DBA
  • Lease agreement with business name and address
  • Business utility bill

Essentially, you just need two (2) forms of legal documentation that can serve as proof for your  business name and business location. This documentation provides the information that D&B will use to generate the DUNS number and assign it specifically to your business.
